Weight-Room Workouts for Cyclists: Part 1

Written on January 1, 2008 at 4:41 pm, by Eric Cressey

Cyclists spend thousands of dollars on precise training and nutrition protocols, seek out the best equipment and supplements, and look to find the best training groups to push them to the next level. However, in spite of their enthusiasm and commitment, very few cyclists are taking advantage of valuable training off the bike. This three-part series outlines six key exercises that not only optimize performance, but will keep you healthy for the long haul, as well.

Pressing and the Overhead Athlete

Written on January 1, 2008 at 3:55 pm, by Eric Cressey

Many of you are going to hate me for what I’m about to say. I don’t let my overhead throwing athletes overhead press or bench press with a straight bar.

There. I said it. Call me all the names you’d like but ask yourself this:

“Am I cursing Eric’s name because I think that the cost-to-benefit ratio of overhead pressing and straight bar bench pressing justifies their use, or is it because I feel naked without these options? I have to bench press. I can’t start an upper body day with any other exercise.”

Healing the Hips

Written on January 1, 2008 at 3:27 pm, by Eric Cressey

Mastering The Deadlift: Part I

Written on May 24, 2007 at 3:08 pm, by Eric Cressey

Everyone knows how valuable the deadlift can be, but not everyone does it regularly. Yeah, a few people are just plain lazy, but many are simply afraid. They’ve never been taught to do it safely and are concerned that they’ll get hurt if they push the weights without assurance that their form is on-point.

With that in mind, this series was born. Here I’ll give you a full-on analysis of a good deadlift, examples of every single deadlift debacle you’ll see in the gym, and provide you with plenty of deadlift variations you can incorporate into your training for longstanding success with this fantastic movement.

First, though, we need to cover eight prerequisite issues to set the stage.

10 Rules of Corrective Lifting

Written on February 22, 2007 at 7:05 pm, by Eric Cressey

Whether I like it or not, around these parts I’ve become known as an “injury guy.” People get jacked up doing stupid stuff, and guys like Mike Robertson, Bill Hartman, and myself fix them up by pointing out that said “stuff” is, in fact, stupid.

To that end, a lot of my consulting work is done in the corrective exercise realm — basically handling people who fall into the gray area between physical therapy and healthy training… bridging the gap, so to speak. We know that 80% of Americans will have lower back pain at some point in their lives, and 70% of gym-goers will experience shoulder problems somewhere along the line, but we can’t send all of these people to physical therapy.
