Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 11/18/19

Let's kick off the week with some recommended reading and listening from around the 'Net:

Eric Cressey Talks Shoulders and Modern Baseball - I joined Jason Glass on his podcast to discuss baseball training and much more.

He told a kid to slide. Then he got sued. - This is a great write-up on a legal battle with implications for every coach. It's scary to think that our society is this litigious, particularly when it comes to a well-intentioned, under compensated high school baseball coach.

Todd Hamer: Getting Fired, Re-creating Yourself, and Shaping Your Role - Todd Hamer is one of my favorite people in the strength and conditioning field, and he shares some excellent career insights on this podcast with Brett Bartholomew.

One of the most important “competencies” for being a durable pitcher is having as much active control of your passive external rotation range-of-motion at the shoulder. 👇 It’s a big red flag for me when I see a pitcher with loads of passive external rotation (measured in supine) who is weak as a kitten in a prone external rotation against gravity past 90 degrees of external rotation. Here, @ckluber28 shows off really good active control over a big ROM on a prone external rotation end-range lift-off. Notice that he avoids the most common substitution patterns: wrist extension, elbow flexion, elbow extension, and scapular depression. 👏, Corey. 👍 I would call this exercise a motor control drill. We use it in warm-ups and as fillers between medicine ball drills. It complements cuff strength and timing drills nicely in a comprehensive arm care program. 👊 Apologies for the shaky camera work. I get excited when I see good arm care work in action.😂 #cspfamily #clevelandindians

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 6/21/18

I hope you're having a great week. I'm gearing up for a weekend of presenting in Colorado, but the good news is that having some flights opens up some time for distraction-free reading and writing on the plane. Here are some good reads from around the 'net from the past week:

New Rules for Being a Strength Coach - Todd Hamer wrote this great piece up for EliteFTS, and I love the concept of continuous improvement in strength and conditioning. Todd's a guy who is always seeking to get better, no matter how long he's been in the industry.

Having an Approach to Having an Approach - This was a guest blog I wrote for my business partner, Pete Dupuis, a few years ago. I cover some fitness business concepts, including networking and lifetime value of a customer.

5 No-Diet Ways to Get Lean - I really liked this article from Dani Shugart on behavior modifications for nutritional success.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 6/15/18

It's been a quiet week here on the blog because I'm still recovering from last week's Sturdy Shoulder Solutions product launch and the barrage of college athletes who are all starting up at CSP at the same time. Luckily, I do have some good content from around the 'net for you:

Pat Rigsby on Building Your Ideal Fitness Business - Pat Rigsby is the man. I got this email from Mike Robertson in my inbox this morning and cleared time in my schedule to listen to this podcast right away. He always has great business insights for fitness professionals.

10 Strength and Conditioning Lessons from Friends, Mentors, and Colleagues - This is a great compilation from my buddy Todd Hamer, who's been a mainstay in the college strength and conditioning field for as long as I can remember.

Lessons Learned from a Bum Elbow - I posted this story on my Facebook page the other day, and there are a lot of lessons in here for fitness professionals and rehabilitation specialists, especially those who deal with throwing athletes.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 2/29/16

Happy Leap Day! Here's some recommended strength and conditioning reading to help you make the most of your "extra" day:

Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World - Adam Grant (author of "Give and Take) released this earlier in the month, and I just wrapped up the audiobook and enjoyed it. If you like Malcolm Gladwell, Seth Godin, Chip and Dan Heath, Daniel Pink, etc., you'll like it, too.

Carb Controversy: Why Low Carb Diets Have It All Wrong - Brian St. Pierre makes an appearance in our recommending reading two weeks in a row. He's been on fire with great content for Precision Nutrition. Speaking of Brian, don't forget that he'll be delivering a one-day seminar at Cressey Sports Performance in Massachusetts on April 10. Click here for more information.

You Need a Reality Check - Todd Hamer is a great strength and conditioning coach and writer. He offers some great perspective in this piece. In short, it's very easy to criticize when you aren't willing to think critically about someone's rationale for programming as they do.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 6/1/15

Happy June, everyone! Let's kick this month off on the right foot with some recommended strength and conditioning reading:

Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success - I just finished up this best-seller from Adam Grant, a professor at The Wharton School. It was an outstanding look at some factors that characterize those who are successful in the business world, and there are definitely a lot of applications to coaching. I've already recommended it to several friends who manage training facilities.

Why Tommy John Surgeries Won't Cease Any Time Soon - This ESPN The Magazine article does a good job of addressing the social (as opposed to physiological rationale) for why arm injuries continue to be such a problem.

Are You Consuming, Producing, or Engaging? -  Todd Hamer is a good friend of mine who always has great insights on coaching, and this is no exception.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 3/4/15

It's been a busy week, so I've gotten a late start to putting out new content. Fortunately, I came across some good reads from around the 'net. Check these out:

The Positivity Trap: How Upbeat Coaches Can Kill Client Results - I thought this was a very interesting perspective from Krista Scott-Dixon at Precision Nutrition.

Common Arm Care Mistakes: Installment 5 - I published this article last year right around this time, and I think it's a good reminder for athletes who are both pitchers and position players. Managing weekly scheduling can be tough, and this article provides some thoughts on how to best accomplish it.

Teaching Humility and Success - Todd Hamer is an old friend of mine in the strength and conditioning world, and I loved this post from him on building character in our athletes.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 7/11/12

Here's this week's list of recommended strength and conditioning reading:

Elite Training Mentorship - The most recent update includes quite a bit of content from me, including two exercise demonstrations, an article, as well as two staff in-services: "Scapular Positioning During Table Arm Care Exercises" and "Understanding and Coaching the Anterior Core." If you haven't checked out Elite Training Mentorship yet, I'd strongly encourage you to give it a shot.

Rehab = Training, Training = Rehab: Top 10 Takeaways: Part 1 and Part 2- This was a two-part post I wrote about 20 months ago as a review of Charlie Weingroff's outstanding DVD set. I'd highly recommend the resource, but even if you don't pick it up, you'll walk away with some valuable tips from these two articles.

By the Coach for the Coach: 10 Things I Learned During the 2011-2012 School Year - I loved this post from my buddy Todd Hamer. Todd, the head strength and conditioning coach at Robert Morris University, is one of the best college strength and conditioning coaches I know. He's a tremendous motivator and has loads of experience in the trenches, even if he doesn't have a big internet name. Up-and-coming coaches need to read stuff like this as often as possible!
